인간 세상으로 내려온 판도라는
프로메테우스의 동생 에피메테우스에게 보내졌습니다.
프로메테우스는 에피메테우스에게 제우스 신께서 주신 선물은

첫눈에 반한 에피메테우스는
형의 말을 까맣게 잊어버리고 판도라와 결혼하고 말았습니다.

판도라는 제우스가 준 상자를 볼 때마다 생각했습니다.
보지 말라고 하니 더 궁금해진 판도라는
매일매일 상자만 쳐다보게 되었지요.

그래, 나 혼자만 살짝 보면 괜찮을 거야.”
호기심을 이기지 못한 판도라는 상자 뚜껑을 열고 말았습니다.
펑- 큰 소리가 나며 어두운 무엇인가 창문 밖으로 빠져나갔습니다.

“이게 뭐야!?”
상자에서 나온 것들은
욕심, 시기, 질투, 복수, 질병 등 인간들을 해치는
아주 나쁜 것들이었습니다. 판도라는 깜짝 놀라 뚜껑을 닫았지만

이미 재앙은 세상으로 퍼진 뒤였습니다.
“내가 호기심을 이기지 못해 세상을 병들게 만들었구나.”
판도라는 울며 절망했습니다.
미처 상자를 빠져나가지 못한 ‘희망’ 만이 맨 밑바닥에 남았지요.

이렇게 제우스는 판도라의 호기심을 이용해
인간들에게 벌을 주었습니다.
하지만 다행히 희망이 남아 온갖 나쁜 일이 벌어져도
인간은 희망을 잃지 않고 살아가게 됩니다.
