판의 오만한 말을 들은 아폴론은 내기를 받아들여

산에서는 연주 내기가 열리게 되었습니다.
미다스 왕을 포함한 많은 사람들이
내기를 보려고 모여들었습니다.
아폴론은 리라를 연주했고 판은 갈대 피리를 연주했습니다.

“판의 피리 소리가 더 아름다웠습니다.
판이 이겼습니다.”
심판을 맡은 미다스 왕이 자신과 친한 친구인
판의 손을 들었습니다.

화가 난 아폴론은 미다스 왕의 두 귀를 위로 세게 잡아당겼습니다.
“제대로 들을 줄도 모르는 귀에게 벌을 내리겠다!”
미다스 왕의 귀는
당나귀 귀처럼 길쭉하게 하늘을 향해 늘어났습니다.

“아아, 내 귀!”
귀가 부끄러워진 미다스 왕은
길쭉한 모자를 만들어서 쓰고 다녔습니다.
아무도 미다스 왕의 귀가 길쭉해진 걸 모르도록 말이지요.

하지만 숨길 수 있는 것도 잠시뿐이었습니다.
미다스 왕이 머리를 깎을 때가 된 것이지요.
궁으로 이발사가 찾아왔습니다.
미다스 왕은 어쩔 수 없이 모자를 벗었습니다.

“앗!”
이발사는 당나귀 귀 같은 미다스 왕의 귀를 보고
소스라치게 놀랐습니다.
“어디 가서 내 귀가 당나귀 귀라고 말하면 무사하지 못할 것이다.”

미다스 왕은 무섭게 말했습니다.
이발사는 왕의 귀에 대해서 여기저기 말하고 싶어
입이 근질근질했습니다.
하지만 미다스 왕의 엄포가 생각나

차마 말하지는 못하고 속으로 끙끙 앓았지요.
마음이 답답하자 이발사는 병이 나고 말았습니다.
어떤 의사들도 이발사의 병이 왜 생겼는지 알아낼 수 없었습니다.
참다못한 이발사는 아무도 없는 대나무 숲으로 갔습니다.

그리고 소리를 질렀습니다.
“임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀! 임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀다!”
시원하게 소리치고 크게 웃은 이발사는
그 뒤로 마음의 병이 말끔하게 나았습니다.

하지만 이발사가 다녀간 후부터
대나무 숲에 바람이 불 때마다 이상한 소리가 들려왔어요.
“임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀. 임금님 귀는 당나귀 귀.”

그 말을 듣고는 마을에 소문이 퍼져서
