総司の闘志は　燃え上がる
時は幕末。京の都では、尊王攘夷、倒幕を目指す人々の動きが活発となり、
徳川幕府は、それを抑えるために新しい力を必要とした。
そして文久三年、「新選組」が誕生。局長・近藤勇、芹沢、新見。

副長・土方歳三、山南(やまなみ)。「誠」一字の旗印のもと、
結束固きこの集団の中で、一番の剣の使い手こそ、沖田総司その人であった。
「名乗ろうか。私は、新選組副長助勤、沖田総司だ」
歳は二十歳で目元涼しく、姿凛々しく美しく。

江戸に生まれて九つで、近藤の家の道場・試衛館に入門し、
十年の内に免許皆伝、師範代。皆に好かれた人柄は、
まことに明るく朗らかで。壬生の屯所の近所の子供たちとは鬼ごっこ。
「では、今度は私が鬼だ。さぁ、十数えるうちに逃げるんだぞ。よいか」

優しい心の持ち主なり。
新選組誕生の翌年、大きな事件が起きる。池田屋事件である。
あるとき、新選組は、尊王攘夷派の企みを知る。彼らは、京の町に火を放ち、
御所に押し入り、天皇を長州に連れ去るという。

また、近々、彼らが宿屋・池田屋に集まることを知る。総司は憤った。
「町じゅうに火をつけられたら、多くの人が家や身内を失うことになる。
許せぬ。絶対に阻止しなければ！」
斯くて、新選組は池田屋へ。その夜、六月五日は祇園祭の宵山で。

日が暮れかかり、鉾や山に灯がともり、祇園囃子が鳴り響く。
新選組のその日の出で立ち、鎖帷子(くさりかたびら)、
胴衣に鉢金(はちがね)、浅葱(あさぎ)の羽織に山道ダンダラ白き木綿の袖印。
沖田総司は筋金入りの鉢巻締めて、役者のような姿なり。

目指す池田屋。近藤勇は、総司、永倉、藤堂と、
試衛館仕込みの三名引き連れ、まっすぐ二階を目指したり。
敵の二十数名抜刀す。
沖田総司の燃える刀が唸りを上げて最初の一人を一刀両断。

それが口火で、大激闘。
新選組は勝利した。
と、その時、総司の体に異変が起きた。
総司は喀血をした。

然るに、この池田屋事件をきっかけとして、新選組の名は世に轟き、
幕府も大いに認めた。新選組は一層活躍を続けた。
「総司、体の具合はどうだ。咳がまだ続いているんだろう」
「土方さん、いやだなぁ、咳なんかしてませんよ。大丈夫です」

「ま、とにかく医者に行け。なんなら、俺が付いて行ってやる」
「あ、いえいえ、医者に行くのは気が進みませんが、
ちゃんと一人で行けますから」
医者にかかって見立てられたは、労咳で、命はあと二年。

言われて総司も観念して、医者の元へと通ううち、
折しも出会った医者の娘に、恋をした。けれど、なんで言えようこの思い
「好きだと打ち明けたところでどうなる。私の命は長くない。
私は… 、私は、人を恋してはいけないのだ」

生涯たった一度だけ、胸にともした恋の灯を、総司は自ら吹き消した。
そして、時代は激しく移り変わってゆく。
総司の体は次第に次第に悪くなり、剣の時代も終わりゆく。
菊は栄えて葵は枯れる。歴史の流れは止められず。

慶応三年、将軍・徳川慶喜は朝廷に大政を奉還し、王政復古の大号令。
それからほどなく、近藤勇は鉄砲により狙撃されて傷を負い。
明くる慶応四年、新選組は「鳥羽伏見の戦い」で新政府軍に敗れたり。
この合戦で共に戦えなかったことを、総司は深く悲しんだ。

やがて総司は、敵に見つかるのを避けるため、
江戸は千駄ヶ谷の植木屋平五郎の家の離れに移り住む。
そこは、総司の終(つい)の棲家(すみか)となる。
新選組は、その後の戦いでも敗れ、近藤勇は捕縛(ほばく)され、処刑された。

そのことを総司は知らず、そのふた月のち、総司は誰にも看取られず、
ひとり、死出の旅路のその間際、幻を見ていた。
「あ、近藤先生、土方さん、来てくださったんですか。
総司は、きょうまで、力の限り生きました… 」

慶応四年五月三十日
沖田総司は、この世を去った。
傍らには、愛刀・菊一文字則宗があった。
強く生き、儚く散ったその命。

享年、二十五歳であった。
