춘향 모친은 정신이 없이 앉아 있고,
향단이는 파루 소리를 듣느라고 대문 밖에 가 서있다가 파루 소리 듣고,

그때여 춘향이는 내일 죽을 일을 생각하니 정신이 삭막하여,
칼머리 베고 누웠다가, 홀연히 잠이 드니,

비몽사몽(非夢似夢)간에 남산 백호(白虎)가 옥 담을 뛰어넘어 들어 와
춘향 앞에 가 우뚝, 주홍 입 짝, 어흥 으르르르르르.
깜짝 놀래어 깨달으니, 무서운 마음이 솟구치며
소름이 끼치고 몸에서 땀이 주루루루루루루.

벌렁벌렁 떨고 앉었을 제,
부름소리가 언뜻언뜻 들리거늘,
모친인 줄은 모르고 귀신소리로 짐작허고,
“야, 이 몹쓸 귀신들아! 나를 잡아가려거든 조르지 말고 잡아가거라.

내가 무슨 죄 있느냐? 살인죄냐, 강도죄냐? 항쇄(項鎖) 족쇄(足鎖)가 웬일이며,
