괴물이었는데 헤라클레스가 죽였던 괴물 사자와
히드라의 남매이기도 했습니다. 저승을 지키고 있어

평범한 인간이라면 살아서 만날 수도 없는 개였어요.
그런 개를 죽이는 것도 아니고 생포하라니 헤라클레스가
절대 이루지 못하도록 단단히 머리를 쓴 게 틀림없네요.
“산 사람이 어떻게 저승을 갑니까?”

“그건 네가 알아서 해야 하는 문제지 않느냐.”
헤라클레스는 어이가 없었습니다. 죽어서 저승으로 가려던 찰나,
전령 역할을 하던 신 헤르메스가 나타나 길을 안내해 주어
다행히 죽지 않고 무사히 저승에 도착할 수 있었습니다.

“저승의 신 하데스님, 케르베로스를
잠시 데려가도 되겠습니까? 부디 허락해 주십시오.”
“맨손으로 데려갈 수 있다면 그렇게 해 보아라.”
저승의 신 하데스는 살짝 웃으며 말했습니다.

절대 성공할 수 있을 리가 없다고 생각한 것이지요.
온갖 종류의 괴물을 모두 상대해 본 헤라클레스는
거침없이 케르베로스를 향해 돌진했습니다. 머리가
셋이나 달린 덩치 큰 괴물이었기 때문에 생포하는 시간이

길면 길수록 헤라클레스에게 불리했어요. 헤라클레스는
케르베로스의 정면으로 돌진하다 살짝 방향을 틀어
옆쪽으로 팔을 뻗었습니다. 그러고는 세 개의 머리를
한 번에 안았어요. 팔에 힘을 주자

케르베로스가 답답해 캑캑거렸습니다.
“으윽..!”
케르베로스의 몸부림은 점점 더 격렬해졌지만
헤라클레스는 움직이지 않고 세 개의 목을 더 세게

끌어안을 뿐이었습니다. 결국 시간이 지나 지쳐버린
케르베로스는 기절해 버렸어요. 기진맥진한 헤라클레스도
그제야 힘을 풀었습니다. 헤라클레스는 헤르메스가
알려줬던 길 그대로 이승으로 돌아왔습니다. 왕에게

케르베로스를 보여주자 왕은 기겁을 하며
옆에 있던 커다란 항아리 속으로 숨었습니다.
“제발 그 개를 치우고 너도 내 눈앞에서 사라져라!
다시는 나타나지 마라!”

이렇게 헤라클레스는 12과업을 모두 끝내고
자유의 몸이 되었습니다. 물론 케르베로스는 다시
저승으로 데려다주었다고 해요.
