아이가 생기질 않는듯하니
부처님께 직접 가서 공양을 드려봄이 어떻겠소?”

그렇게 해서 남씨 부부는 깊은 산 속에 있는 절에
공양을 드리러 길을 떠났어. 산길은 험했고

날까지 어두워지기 시작했지.
“날이 더 어두워지기 전에 조금만 더 서두릅시다.”
그렇게 부지런히 산을 올라가는데 갑자기
짐승의 울부짖는 소리가 들리지 뭐야?

“케겡켕켕켕!!!!!”
“크르렁”
“서방님! 이게 무슨 소리지요?”
“부인, 이곳에 계시오.

내가 돌아올 때까지 꼼짝 말고 계셔야 하오.”
“부디 몸조심하셔요.”
남대감이 소리를 따라가면서
등에 메고 있던 활을 움켜쥐었어.

갈라진 숲길을 따라가 보니
시커먼 늑대 한 마리가
여우를 물어뜯고 있는 게 아니겠어?
“저런!”

남 대감은 활을 날려서 늑대를 쏘아 맞혔어.
활은 명중했고 늑대는 나자빠져 버렸어.
여우는 다리를 절뚝이며 절을 하듯이 돌아보다가
사라져버렸어.

늑대가 움직이지 않는 것을 확인한 후에야
남대감은 다시 돌아왔어.
“서방님, 괜찮으십니까?”
“나는 괜찮소.

그보다 산짐승들이 출몰하는듯 하니
어서 가십시다.”
남씨 부부는 서둘러 길을 올랐고
깜깜한 밤이 되어서야 드디어 절에 도착했어.

따뜻하고 안전한 곳에 왔다는 안도감에
정신을 잃을 듯이 잠을 잤대.
그날 꿈에 여우 한 마리가 나타나서
곱게 절을 했어.

“저를 살려주셔서 감사합니다.
이 은혜는 꼭 갚겠습니다.”
동시에 눈을 번쩍 뜬 남씨 부부가
서로 마주 보며 놀랐지.

“부인도 여우 꿈을 꾸었소?”
“예, 저도 여우가 나타나서 절을 했습니다.”
부부가 같은 꿈을 꾸었다니 의아했지만,
여우를 살려준 일이 생각보다 크게 놀라서

그랬나 보다하고 짐작했지.
